In his 1993 classic of nature writing, Staying Put, Scott Russel Sanders wrote: "One's native ground is the place where, since before you had words for such knowledge, you have known the smells, the seasons, the birds and beasts, the human voices, the houses, the ways of working, the lay of the land, the quality of light... Loyalty to place arises from sources deeper than narcissism. It arises from our need to be at home on the earth. We marry ourselves to the creation by knowing and cherishing a particular place..."
More than most people these days, residents of the Upper Peninsula proudly identify with their region. The UP Places gallery highlights some the UP's more particular places.
